According to Bobby’s co-worker and friend Jerry there is what is called the 100 mile rule. The rule says if you are 100 miles away from your wife then it is ok to cheat on her, it doesn’t count. At first this is Jerry’s way of telling Bobby to relax and have a good time but eventually it turns out to be a ploy to ruin Bobby.
Bobby Jones (Jake Weber) is a salesman from Detroit who goes to Los Angeles for a two week seminar with his co-worker Jerry (David Thornton) and his boss Howard (Michael McKean). While in Los Angeles Jerry tries to convince Bobby to loosen up and have some fun even if it means cheating on his wife. But Bobby wants to stay loyal to his wife and refuses. Later in the trip their boss Howard reveals to Jerry that he is giving Bobby a very important assignment that Jerry was hoping for. Jerry then decides to further push Bobby to cheat on his wife so that Jerry can ruin him.
Jerry hires an actress by the name of Monica (Maria Bello) to seduce Bobby and get him in bed with her. Then with a hidden camera she will record footage of it. Monica black mails Bobby saying if he doesn’t pay her a certain amount of money then his wife will see the video tape. Bobby is in on the whole thing and is going to split the money with Monica.

Unfortunately it all snow balls from there. Monica gets the footage she needs but problems arise with her boyfriend. The boyfriend comes up with a way to get the money himself but he has problems of his own. Meanwhile with the help from Howard, Bobby has a way at getting back at Monica, but that plan also goes awry.
Overall the 100 Mile Rule is a pretty enjoyable dark comedy. There are many twists throughout the movie as every single character has some kind of plan that goes very wrong. I’m not very familiar with the lead actor Jake Weber and to be honest he and David Thornton give pretty average performances but they at least perform well not to ruin the movie.
As is the case with most of her movie, Maria Bello is the real star of this movie. She’s plays the beautiful seductive con woman perfectly. So perfectly that if I didn’t know she was a con woman coming into the movie then I would’ve believed myself that she was actually falling for Bobby. There are a couple of other good guest performances too. Monica’s boyfriend is played by Nick Chinlund who was born to play the brute role. He’s big, mean, has a goatee, and has a very gruff voice. Michael McKean also gives a good performance as Bobby’s boss who tries to help Bobby. He seems to be the most level-headed smart person in the movie but even his plans are foiled.
Overall the 100 Mile Rule was a good flick. It starts off a little slow when it’s just the guys on their business trip but once Maria Bello’s character shows up the movie picks up and doesn’t look back.
